Daniel R. Coats served as United States Ambassador to Germany from 2001 – 2005. Arriving for duty one week prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, his first public event was a speech at the Brandenburg Gate thanking German citizens for their outpouring of support. The years that followed combined the customary responsibilities of representing America at key events while also serving as a valuable member of the Bush administration’s national security team. This latter role was greatly assisted by Ambassador Coats’ previous service as a member of the United States Senate where he served on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Select Committee for Intelligence.
