Sagamore's Public Policy Fellowships

Sagamore Internship and Fellowship Opportunities in Public Policy Research

Offering innovative ideas and creative solutions that address the many challenges facing contemporary society is a key part of Sagamore’s mission. Those ideas and solutions, however, emerge from in-depth and objective research by individuals who are committed to applying their findings to the real world, measuring the results of those ideas, and seeking to replicate “best practices” that result in sound and effective policy reform.

In order to introduce current scholars to the craft of “applied research” and to raise a new generation of public policy researchers, Sagamore offers the unique opportunity for college/university faculty members and students to participate in the life of a public policy think tank.  The Sagamore Public Policy Internship and Fellowship Program allows successful candidates to learn first hand about “applied research” and spend time in conducting focused research in some of the key areas in which Sagamore specializes, including:

  • Civil society
  • Social welfare policy
  • Education reform
  • Economic development
  • Urban planning
  • Energy policy
  • Global trade and the Heartland

During the internship/fellowship appointment, students and faculty will focus on a topic that utilizes their own research strengths and interests and contributes to Sagamore’s body of policy research.  They will work closely with Sagamore staff to learn about applied research, discuss the ways of presenting their findings, and explore ways of impacting effective decision-making.  (Click here to review profiles of past faculty and student experiences.)

As Sagamore interns and fellows, students and faculty participate in the daily life of Sagamore.  They receive a nominal stipend or academic credit and work alongside Sagamore’s research staff, have access to Sagamore’s rich repository of policy research, and participate in ongoing research and policy discussions.  As part of their internship/fellowship, all interns and faculty fellows are invited to lead a public forum and interact with state or national policymakers on his/her research topic at the conclusion of their internship/fellowship period.  All efforts are made to maintain the affiliation between the faculty and student interns if the research experience proves worthwhile for both parties.
